RISK MANAGEMENT FOR YOUTH AND SCHOOL TRIPS

Following the publication of ISO 31030 - Managing Travel Risks - Guidance for organisations, in 2021, ISO has been working on addressing the education sector's specific risk management needs and challenges. The upcoming ISO 31031 guidance document, untitled “Risk Management for Youth and School Trips”, will focus on the key aspects educational institutions should focus on to fully safeguard their staff and youth. The International SOS Foundation has been a part of the working level group 9 under the leadership of the convener, Joël Maier and with the involvement of Holly Krop.

Upon the publication of ISO 31031, the International SOS Foundation will offer a dedicated course to help educational institutions understand and navigate the new standard. This upcoming training will provide guidance and best practice tools in line with the new ISO document for managing risk for youth and school trips for both domestic and international travel, with specific attention to minors due to their particular vulnerabilities.

The course will aim to help participants to:

  • Develop a clear understanding of the elements of ISO 31031:2023
  • Comprehend how to integrate these elements into existing or new policies and procedures.
  • Describe how these are enacted by trip leaders and staff.
  • Know how to respond in an emergency.
